Smoke Alarms, Safety, and Compliance: Updated Rental Rules in Victoria

Property safety isn’t just good practice — it’s the law. Recent updates in Victoria mean stricter standards for rental properties, especially around smoke alarms and safety checks.

Smoke Alarms

All rental properties must have working smoke alarms, tested at least once every 12 months. Tenants must be informed of their location and how to test them.

Electrical and Gas Safety

Licensed electricians and gasfitters must complete checks every two years, with records provided to tenants upon request.

Minimum Standards

From heating to ventilation and security, properties must meet the Victorian Rental Minimum Standards before being listed.

Penalties and Enforcement

Consumer Affairs Victoria has increased enforcement activity — and fines are higher for non-compliance.

At RENTED, our systems ensure every property under management meets the latest safety and compliance standards — protecting both owners and tenants.
